With the carefree days of summer now behind us, getting your family back into a routine is important. Setting a routine will not only help reduce stress of otherwise chaotic mornings, but it will also set your family up for having a successful school year. Check out Circle of Life Cremation and Burial Centre’s tips below to learn how parents and their kids can ease into their back-to-school routine!

Reduce Anxiety

Like most things in life, change comes with a certain amount of stress and anxiety. Same goes for returning to school. Whether it be the anxiousness associated with the first day, a new school or a new teacher, going back to school is not easy for a lot of children! Discussing your children’s concerns well in advance can help reduce their anxiety. Partnering their concerns with ways of coping is a great solution. For example, if your child is concerned about getting lost at school, walk them to their classroom on the first day, and point out washrooms, the office, etc. on the way.

Make Sleep a Priority

To create the foundation for a successful school year, a scheduled bed time will be needed again. A great idea for making this easier for children is if the whole family changes their nighttime routines. Getting a restful, proper sleep is important for everyone’s health – not just those returning to school! Parents can act as sleep role models to children by having their own sleep schedule. As a family, try mindfulness techniques such as bedtime yoga or meditation to adjust to an earlier bedtime. In addition, create a proper sleep setting for your child by using blackout blinds, eliminating clutter and ensuring a quiet environment.

Unplug in the Evenings

A proper sleep routine is aided when technology is unplugged earlier on in the evening. Parents should set an example for their kids by limiting the time they spend on laptops, tablets and cellphones. Buy family members their own alarm clocks, so that they are not tempted to use the one on their phones. Purchasing a family docking system is a great solution for keeping all devices organized, charged and out of the bedroom. Reducing evening ‘screen time’ is a great habit to start when children are young, as it becomes a lot harder to do when they get older.

Set a Schedule

Parents should encourage their children to help with the school routine, including: packing lunches, choosing their clothing the night before and ensuring their backpack includes whatever’s required for the following day. Having everything ready the evening before can eliminate the scramble for last-minute items in the morning.

The staff at Circle of Life Cremation and Burial Centre wish you and your family the best for a successful school year ahead!
